Projects three and four...

As I won't be able to post next week (off on hols) I thought I would do two projects at once this week.

Project three is based on Gilded Poppies by Tracey Laughton. Here is the original design


And here is my take on it.



The main thing that I was lacking was the gilding flakes needed for the image within the black card. Instead I used versamark ink and mica powders, choosing a butterfly as my image. The topper was cut out using framelit dies, the largest size and then two sizes smaller cut to make the frame part, which was then embossed. You can't see the embossing clearly in the pic but it looks really nice. It took ages to tie the bow! Still need practise on that one. Instead of a gem (don't have any to match) I decided to grab a wooden charm, glitter it and then seal with glossy accents.

Actually quite similar for once! I was so pleased that I actually had the die for this one. I didn't have the cosmic shimmer or the double sided adhesive film, but found a lovely glitter paper in my stash. I also didn't have the golden pearls that were used in the original to make the trail, so I made do with the gem wheel that I have. Aside from the slight wonkiness (I've never been able to do a straight edge) I'm really pleased with this one. 

I am enjoying doing this project book; my creativity is still a little low at the moment so it comforts me a little that I can still do projects, even though the bases are from other peoples. Then again, what is a project book for if not for inspiration? 

When I get back from holiday there will be a little trip report on here, and then I am going to carry on with the project book, as well as getting back into creating my own projects, comtinuing with the cross stitch, and of course promoting my book! Busy times!

    The lack of Gilding Flakes ... I love mine but really don't use them as often as I'd like to (EVERYTHING - E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G - would be gilded if I had my way) - so if you don't feel that you'd use them very often then don't buy them. They'll just take up space in your crafty stash. However ... there are other things you can use instead, which take up less room.

    You could buy some embossing powders in metallics, and sprinkle a little of silver/gold/bronze/ etc etc - so that you have a mixture on (in this instance) your butterfly - and it would give it a great effect. Or use a mixture of mica powders. I personally use Pearl-Ex and have done for donkeys years (fifteen? + or -) but they're quite pricey and there are cheaper ones. I can see you have some - but if you want an effect which works like a sort of differential interference type of thing, just mix up the mica powders on your image - but remember to only use a little teeny bit as that's all you need, and you don't want to waste any.

    You could also try embossing with glittered embossing powders. Or ... you can buy imitation gold in a leaf form. I've seen it on ebay really cheaply - 10 sheets for a couple of pounds. But obviously, shop around as you may find it even cheaper.

    The 'your version of' Sue Wilson card ... I honestly truthfully prefer your version. Yours looks more 'together', more toned, more sumptious. The S.Wilson card looks too 'placed', almost too perfect - sort of like there's nothing as perfect as nature, but the Wilson card is too perfect. Hmm.. I know what I'm trying to say but getting it into words is escaping me.

    But ... I truthfully think your card is the better of the two. If I were choosing a winner for a competition, yours would be the one I'd give first prize to.

      Thanks Cobs, I'm back from holiday now but still in holiday mode if you know what I mean. Once Monday swings by again I am going to be more focussed. I have started planning out project 4 in the book, and I am on a strict spending ban (glue etc aside) until my stash is a little lower. If you've read my latest post, you will see I bought one thing on my holiday that's craft related, but it is the last cross stitch kit I will buy for a while as I have quite a few in my stash now. I just need to be able to organise my time a little better...

What to do when you hit a wall?

Sorry guys, this is gonna be another pic-lite one. This is for two reasons. The first is because I decided to be a complete idiot the other day and crack my head open on the door at work, so I have to take things easy for a couple of days. The second is strange. I woke up the other day and it was as if someone had flipped a switch. All of the self-confidence that I had built up through my crafting over the last year has disappeared - just like that. I've spent the large majority of my life thinking that I am not good enough; in what I do, what I say, in short, in who I am. With crafts I was finally starting to believe in myself. So it is very hard at the moment, as I feel that I am right back at square one. I am hoping that this is temporary, and that I will soon feel myself again. Altering again!

My craft mojo came back! I decided to treat myself the other day to a new paper pad, and chose G45 Steampunk Spells. Graphic 45 papers are expensive but boy are they worth it! I wish I'd got into them sooner as there are some older pads that are gorgeous, but unavailable now. Anyway, once I got the pad and overcame the urge to just admire the paper and do nothing with it, I got to work. I decided to try to make something to enter into a couple of challenges, namely the  Craft room something old, something new challenge  and  That's Crafty! Girl power challenge . The first thing to do was to decide what to make. I was going to do a card, but then I found this: This was a cutlery drawer that a friend gave me. To be honest I have been using it to store sharpies in, but no more. Here it is now: What a change! I started by painting it in black acrylic, then got to work on each section. If you leave me now...

A colleague left this week, ready to start her police office training, so I made a funny card for her. I found the definition on Pinterest, then decided to do my own line up for the inside.  I've also been working on the stitch. Here's the update.
