Tim Holtz June challenge

I have to admit, i wasn't feeling this one. Don't get me wrong, I love the tag; as always Tim Holtz has outdone himself. I juat had no idea how to approach it. For a start i didn't want it to be a tag. So i decided to make a card instead.

Then I had an issue with the actual technique, purely because i don't have any stencils that are big enough to cover an entire card, so instead I picked out this stencil of a rose, and decided to use greens and pinks (distress inks) to do a reverse rose effect. I then cut that out and attached it to a background i got free from a magazine. I decided that, as I quite liked the rose, I wanted to use rub-ons instead of stamps as they are smaller. I then attached a metal crown to the top of the card, and the phrase 'Wisdom begins in wonder' which i actually got out of an Einstein quotable notable set that i bought in New York way back in 2009!  The ribbon has been inked with distress inks and the stars are actually shrink plastic, punched out of the bigger pieces that I am working on at the moment.

There will be another post this week, but challenges have to be kept separate from the rest of my work.

  1. I like this,it's good you have gone for something different as I think there are too many that try to look exactly the same and I don't think that's the idea? Anyway,it's certainly not an easy one to do,it took me 2 days to finish mine and I have still got to photo it now.

  2. Hi Ems! I think you've done an amazing job with this challenge, and I agree with Donna (fellow commenter). The Holtz challenges are just like any other crafters/crafting idea ... they're just there for a sort of inspiration. To kind of get your creative juices flowing. Don't make something 'the same as', if you can come up with something of your own, something better.

I started a tag tutorial on my blog (just posted Tut. number 4 today) - and I always say that just because I've made one like 'this' - readers might not have the same stuff as me, so I'll suggest other things which others may have, & hope that the suggestions I make help them think in a different direction so that they can produce something that's totally their own. It might have been inspired by my tutorial, but they can be really proud of themselves for making something completely unique.

Likewise ... you should be really proud of this 'make' - you did it YOUR way, and personally, I like your way. It's individual; it's not a copy; it's YOURS - and that makes it brilliant.
Have faith (in self) and confidence (in your abilities), because you're a really great crafter Ems. Truthfully. A really great crafter.
Sending love, as always ~ Cobs. x

    1. Thanks TC. I've seen your latest tag tutorial - another great piece. I think part of me is trying to run before it can walk per se. It's just disheartening on occasion when my idea does not translate as well as I had hoped. Still, crafting, as you say, is all about perception, so while I may lack the confidence in my own work, I may even be inspiring others. That's a nice thought to have :)

What to do when you hit a wall?

Sorry guys, this is gonna be another pic-lite one. This is for two reasons. The first is because I decided to be a complete idiot the other day and crack my head open on the door at work, so I have to take things easy for a couple of days. The second is strange. I woke up the other day and it was as if someone had flipped a switch. All of the self-confidence that I had built up through my crafting over the last year has disappeared - just like that. I've spent the large majority of my life thinking that I am not good enough; in what I do, what I say, in short, in who I am. With crafts I was finally starting to believe in myself. So it is very hard at the moment, as I feel that I am right back at square one. I am hoping that this is temporary, and that I will soon feel myself again. I have to remind myself that I am very early in my crafting journey, and there are bound to be bumps along the way. I am aware that it is probably linked to my current state of high anxiety, as susta

If you leave me now...

A colleague left this week, ready to start her police office training, so I made a funny card for her. I found the definition on Pinterest, then decided to do my own line up for the inside.  I've also been working on the stitch. Here's the update. Not as much done this week cos of Christmas.  Until next year,  Ems

Altering again!

My craft mojo came back! I decided to treat myself the other day to a new paper pad, and chose G45 Steampunk Spells. Graphic 45 papers are expensive but boy are they worth it! I wish I'd got into them sooner as there are some older pads that are gorgeous, but unavailable now. Anyway, once I got the pad and overcame the urge to just admire the paper and do nothing with it, I got to work. I decided to try to make something to enter into a couple of challenges, namely the  Craft room something old, something new challenge  and  That's Crafty! Girl power challenge . The first thing to do was to decide what to make. I was going to do a card, but then I found this: This was a cutlery drawer that a friend gave me. To be honest I have been using it to store sharpies in, but no more. Here it is now: What a change! I started by painting it in black acrylic, then got to work on each section. I used the Clockworks paper for the background, cut out some clocks fro
